Join Backcountry Women for a workshop to help prep you for exploring trails. It's easy to go hiking with a group of friends who "know the way" or hike on a well-beaten path, but we all need to know the basics to be more self-sufficient when we head out for a hike.

In this workshop we will learn:

  • basic skills to get you started with navigation
  • how to use a variety of tools to add into your kit for navigating
  • identifying map features to help to know where you are
  • implementing use of basic paper maps and being able to use a legend to describe the most common items on topographic maps
  • learn about the advantages of different types of navigation tools
  • a basic understanding of GPS based technology including demos of the AllTrails app and satellite communication devices

We will provide a variety printed map examples to work off of during the workshop.

Note: this course will NOT teach navigation skills using a map and compass.

Location: Half Pints Brewing Co. Details will be sent out in a reminder email. Beer will not be available for purchase, but tea and coffee will be available.

Time: Please arrive at 6:45pm. We will begin promptly at 7:00pm

Bring:

  • Notebook + pen - you’ll want to take notes!

  • Your smartphone
