Join Backcountry Women for a Fire Building Skills Workshop. A good fire can keep you warm, cook your food, purify your water, provide a signal for help, and join us together as we roast marshmallows over a crackling fire at night.

In honour of (M)other's day we are opening this event up to ages 14+ in case participants would like to have a daughter join them to learn this skill! Please register them as a guest when processing your registration.

In this workshop we'll learn the keys to a good fire, different methods of fire starting, gathering and preparing materials, lighting demos and lighting practice. We will learn Leave No Trace fire practice to ensure our fire practices protect the environment.

You will go home with the essential knowledge to build a fire and your own fire-starting kit with some of the tools we used to start our fires. Each kit contains high quality stormproof matches along with waterproof fire starter tinder and match strikers, all packaged in a quality reusable + waterproof case!

Location: Bird's Hill Provincial Park (Details will be sent in a reminder email)

Time: Please arrive at 6:30pm. We will begin promptly at 6:45pm.

Bring: Warm, layered clothing, a Manitoba Parks pass (purchased online if you do not have one), camp chair, snacks and other personal items.

NOTE: in the event of rain, this event will be postponed and we will issue a rain date.

In the spirit of reconciliation, we acknowledge that we live, work, and play on the ancestral lands of the Ininiw, Anishinaabe, and Dakota Nations, and the homeland of the Metis Nation.  Our organization, Backcountry Women, is based on Treaty No. 1 Territory, and we appreciate that this event takes place on Treaty No 1. Territory.

Further details will be provided to registered participants. Participants are responsible for having a valid e-mail address, communicating with the event organizer regarding any changes in attendance, and for checking e-mails prior to an event.

This event allows cancellation no less than 5 days before start of event. If you are no longer able to attend, please see our Cancellation Policy.
