Backcountry Women was founded in 2017 with the vision of connecting like-minded people seeking community and adventure. Today, Backcountry Women has blossomed into a strong community of outdoors enthusiasts across Manitoba.

Not only does Backcountry Women aim to provide unique, quality outdoor experiences, we also have a mandate to unite, educate, and empower through a variety of workshops and resources.

Backcountry Women believes in a judgment free space for a diverse group of women and marginalized genders to encourage and build each other up through the power of the great outdoors.

We offer a variety of events throughout every season in a positive welcoming space for both members and non-members to encourage continual growth, learning, and connection. We make spending time outside easier, so pack your bag and leave the organizing to us!

    Join us for a Backcountry Women Adventure Women hike on McGillivray Falls Self-guiding Trail plus additional exploration on Centennial Trail (spur off McGillivray Falls.) McGillivray Falls is a Whiteshell gem and a beautiful trail year round.

    Duration/Distance: 6-7 KM (McGillivray Falls = 4.3 KM) plus added distance on Centennial Trail
    Experience: This event is open to participants with an average level of fitness who have some hiking experience. You must have the ability to walk with the group at a moderate pace for the duration of the activity and come to the activity with appropriate footwear, gear and outerwear.

    Terrain: Steep rocks with a fair bit of up and down (slippery when wet), thick and boggy forest with mud (expect wet feet if there has been recent rain, and open rock faces. 

    Pace: Slow to moderate with a break for a lunch and additional stops for water as needed. 

    Please keep dogs at home.

    Happy Trails Hikes are about movement, connection, and getting out on to the trails in or around Winnipeg during the week. This series of hikes, happening on select weeknight evenings is open to all levels and is designed to connect with like-minded individuals from the Backcountry Women community.

    Experience: All skill levels welcome. You should have the ability to walk with the group (while physically distancing) at a moderate, steady pace for the duration of the activity. Appropriate footwear and layered clothing is required. 
    Terrain: Trail is gravel and generally level. 

    Pace: This activity will be at a steady, moderate pace.

If you have recently joined Backcountry Women or have been a member for a while but haven't joined us for an event, this session is for you. This will be a fun filled meet and greet!  Come get to know us and other members, and learn more about what we offer and what having a membership is all about.

    Join us for a Backcountry Women Adventure Women hike on on Hanson's Creek Trail for some amazing Whiteshell views and some challenging ups and downs as we go through rocky Canadian Shield terrain.

    Experience: This event is open to participants with an average level of fitness who have some hiking experience. You must have the ability to walk with the group at a moderate pace for the duration of the activity and come to the activity with appropriate footwear, gear and outerwear.

    Terrain: The trail leads through a mix of forested and rocky terrain. There are multiple steeper rocky climbs and descents, as well as a beaver dam crossing. Low lying spots will likely be wet, and rocks may be slippery if wet. 

    Pace: Slow to moderate with a break for a lunch and additional stops for water as needed.

    Please keep dogs at home.

    Join Backcountry Women and AllStoke for an Intro to Paddle Boarding Clinic. This clinic is designed for you to learn all about paddle boarding - from learning about different types of paddle boards, understanding proper safety equipment, recommended gear, paddling techniques, and more!

    Open to beginners and novice paddlers, this is a great opportunity to ask questions, learn practical SUP knowledge and practice technique as we develop your confidence on and off the water.

    All equipment is provided. Please read on for full details! 

    Event leaders: This is a collaborative event between AllStoke (your instructors & event leaders) and Backcountry Women. Organized by Ashley Moore - direct event inquiries here.

    Arrival Time: Your clinic will begin promptly at 6:00 PM. To avoid any congestion, arrive no more than 10 minutes early. Please do not be late, otherwise you forfeit your spot.

    Upon arrival please wait at your vehicle and attend to organizing your personal gear to prepare yourself for the event to allow the instructors sufficient time to prepare and set up for the event. The instructors will greet you when it's time to begin introductions and lessons.  

    Thanks for doing your part to help us run a smooth event for all!

    Location: We will meet at the boat launch in La Salle. Parking is available on site. Respect any no parking signs.

    NOTE: Restrooms are not available at the boat launch; please prepare accordingly. 

    Participant Expectations: You are expected to fully participate and show up prepared and on time to learn within a group of like minded individuals from the Backcountry Women community. Participants must be comfortable in water, though we wear mandatory PFD’s & may not actually get wet. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

    What to bring: Please bring water, bug repellent, sunscreen, and wear appropriate clothing for a variety of conditions (such as capris pants, t-shirt/long sleeve shirt, some extra layers).

    What is Provided:  Participants receive a pre-trip email with a suggested personal gear list. We provide 2 certified Paddle Canada & Outdoor Council of Canada instructors to facilitate the lesson. We also provide the paddle boards, paddles, PFD’s, and Transport Canada approved safety equipment. Essentially, all you do is show up and we’ll be ready to get you on a board!

      Terrain: Paved trail, rolling hills.  Some sections of "forest trail" may be muddy due to rain.

      Pace: This activity will be at a steady, moderate pace.

      This is a dog friendly event.  Dogs are welcome but must remain on leash during the walk (participants are welcome to attend the off-leash area of the park either before or after the event). RETRACTABLE LEASHES ARE NOT ALLOWED. Please consider leaving your dog (s) at home if there is a heat advisory, if they do not walk well in groups, or are unable to complete the entire trail.

        Arrival Time: Arrive by 8:30 AM. We will begin the hike no later than 9:00 AM. The time arranged allows for you to attend to personal needs such as organizing your gear and for leaders to share information with the group. 


        Location: Pine Point Rapids.  The exact meeting location will be shared with registered participants. valid Manitoba Parks pass is required and can be purchased online.

        Experience: This event is open to participants with an average level of fitness who have some hiking experience. You must have the ability to walk with the group at a moderate pace for the duration of the activity and come to the activity with appropriate footwear, gear and outerwear.

        Terrain: Varied terrain. Steep rocks with a fair bit of up and down (slippery when wet), thick and boggy forest with mud (expect wet feet if there has been recent rain / snow), and tree roots make for a tripping hazard. 

        Pace: Moderate with a break for a lunch at the falls and additional stops for water as needed. 


        This is a dog friendly event. Dogs are welcome but must remain on leash during the walk. RETRACTABLE LEASHES ARE NOT ALLOWED. Please leave your dog (s) at home if there is a heat advisory, if they do not walk well in groups, or are unable to complete the entire trail. DOG OWNERS MUST BE AWARE OF OUR DOG POLICY ON OUR FAQ PAGE.
